Padmé Amidala: Anakin, all I want is your love.
Anakin Skywalker: Love won’t save you, Padmé. Only my new powers can do that.
Padmé Amidala: At what cost? You’re a good person. Don’t do this.

Why we collected this quote
Padmé’s appeal here – “you’re a good person, don’t do this” – is so simple and so completely unheard that it breaks your heart. We love this exchange not for the drama but for the gap it reveals: Anakin believes he’s doing all of this for her, and she’s asking him to stop. They are talking about entirely different things and neither realises it.
What does this quote mean? (Meaning & Context)
Padmé has arrived on Mustafar hoping that what Obi-Wan told her isn’t fully true. What she finds is worse. Anakin tells her love won’t save her – only his power can. Padmé’s response is the only thing she has left: the truth of who he used to be, offered as a reason to turn back. He can’t hear it. The tragedy is that he thinks he already is the good person she’s appealing to.
Fun facts & Trivia
Behind the scenes: James Earl Jones has spoken about this scene – even though it predates his involvement – as the moment that makes Vader’s eventual redemption feel earned: Padmé is the last person who speaks to Anakin as a person rather than a threat, and some part of him clearly hears it, even if he can’t act on it yet.
