Qui-Gon Jinn: Obi-Wan. Promise… Promise me… you will train the boy.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Yes, Master.
Qui-Gon Jinn: He… is the chosen one. He… will bring balance. Train him.

Why we collected this quote
We think this is one of the most emotionally devastating scenes in the prequel trilogy – Qui-Gon dying, using his last breath to bind Obi-Wan to a promise neither of them fully understands yet. “He is the chosen one” is both triumphant and tragic, and the whole exchange carries the weight of everything that follows across three more films.
What does this quote mean? (Meaning & Context)
Qui-Gon has been struck down by Darth Maul in the Theed reactor core. Obi-Wan reaches him just in time. The dying Qui-Gon’s only concern is Anakin – extracting a promise from Obi-Wan that he will train the boy regardless of what the Council says. His final words – “he will bring balance, train him” – set the course of the entire prequel trilogy.
Fun facts & Trivia
Behind the scenes: Liam Neeson has said this was one of the most emotionally draining scenes he filmed in the trilogy. The irony that Qui-Gon – the one Jedi who truly understood Anakin – is removed from the picture right at this moment is one of the prequel trilogy’s greatest structural tragedies.
