Qui-Gon has been struck down by Darth Maul in the Theed reactor core. Obi-Wan reaches him just in time. The dying Qui-Gon’s only concern is Anakin – extracting a promise from Obi-Wan that he will train the boy regardless of what the Council says. His final words – “he will bring balance, train him” – set the course of the entire prequel trilogy.

Behind the scenes: Liam Neeson has said this was one of the most emotionally draining scenes he filmed in the trilogy. The irony that Qui-Gon – the one Jedi who truly understood Anakin – is removed from the picture right at this moment is one of the prequel trilogy’s greatest structural tragedies.
