We chose this moment because it’s a wonderfully funny and endearing introduction to what will become one of the saga’s great friendships. C-3PO’s mortified reaction to R2’s “naked” comment is perfectly in character and a great example of the droids’ natural comic chemistry from the very first meeting.
What does this quote mean? (Meaning & Context)
This is the very first time C-3PO and R2-D2 meet – right there in Anakin’s workshop on Tatooine. At this point 3PO is an unfinished protocol droid, with wiring still exposed, and R2 apparently wastes no time pointing that out. 3PO’s flustered dignity in response is charming and immediately establishes why these two work so well together.
Fun facts & Trivia
The decision to have Anakin be the one who built C-3PO was one of the prequel trilogy’s more divisive creative choices, as it ties the droids even more tightly into the Skywalker family saga. This first meeting between R2 and 3PO is the payoff for that connection.
