Why we collected this quote
There are no words after this. A child asking “what are we going to do?” – looking up at the man who is about to kill them – is the single most disturbing implication in the prequel trilogy. We included it because it doesn’t need to show what happens next to be devastating. The audience’s imagination does all the work.
What does this quote mean? (Meaning & Context)
Anakin has entered the Jedi Temple to carry out the purge. In the council room, a group of younglings have hidden, believing the Temple’s most trusted Jedi will protect them. One child steps forward and asks the question with complete trust. The scene cuts away. What follows is shown only as a blue lightsaber reflection on Obi-Wan’s face as he watches the security hologram later.
Fun facts & Trivia
Behind the scenes: George Lucas deliberately chose not to show the killing of the younglings on screen, instead revealing it through Obi-Wan’s reaction to the security recording. The implication is considered one of the most effective pieces of restraint in the saga – the gap in the footage is more disturbing than anything explicit could have been.
