Why we collected this quote
“You’re breaking my heart” is Padmé at her most raw, and it’s one of the few genuinely unguarded moments the prequels give her. We think the line matters because it cuts through all the politics and prophecy and reduces everything to the simplest, most human truth: she loved him, and he is destroying that. The line that follows – “you’re going down a path I can’t follow” – is the most final thing she ever says to him.

The confrontation on Mustafar has reached the point of no return. Padmé’s earlier appeals have failed; Anakin is deaf to reason and increasingly paranoid. Behind the scenes: Natalie Portman has said this scene was one of the hardest to film in the trilogy – she was working opposite a blue screen for much of it, with Hayden Christensen’s presence limited, which made the emotional intimacy of the dialogue technically very difficult to achieve.
